unfortunately, there is no quick fix or setting adjustment (aside from the sensitivity).

what version do you have?  if the original (not the refresh), then you should be able to call VZW, and they'll send you the refresh for free within 2 days (I think regardless if you have had the phone for under a year).

if you already have the refresh, then try contacting them anyway and complaining.  if you don't get the resolution you want, hang up and call again.
